4:20 marked the release of “The Jeffrey” a collaborative album between CCR and Scope Music fam SPNDA and EvillDewer. We were brought in from the beginning to design Single covers and then an alternate cover for a bootleg physicals we helped produce and print (Find more on that in the blog). “Bang Em in tha Head” was a staged photo, we carved the title and some hash marks and took pics of SPNDA with a rusty old knife – this idea plays with imagery from a video concept but since the video isnt out, thats all for now on that one. For “Nebraska” we grabbed a screenshot from youtube of the moment that inspired that title for the track and played with the visual language of youtube to work in other info like the title and artists. The official cover was designed by Sir Froderick and features sweet comic book-based collages. We just added text, logos and titles. We also worked on building a 1-page-website and tweaking the SPNDA’s bandcamp. Yesterday Scope Music fam Pause released his third solo album for free download. We were enlisted once again to shoot and design the cover. For the photos, we tried a few locations eventually finding the right amount of nature in the Arnold Arboretum in JP. The overall concept was to use a natural setting to contrast with the subject and then make the two connect through the grungy but bright post production effects. As always Pause added hand written touches with his logo and the title in his signature graff script. Another fun cover for us, def go check out the project. Working with Metal on single and cover art for his “What should I call this Mixtape?” project was a lot of fun. The concept of the project can be summed up by the title – an open ended introduction from an MC that defies definition. With the cover art we tried to make something that was interesting too look at, even after seeing it many times over, something that referenced Metal’s face logo [! _ !] and something that was cheap to do. We took a tape, a relic from the golden days of hip-hop and smashed it to pieces. Then we took those pieces and assembled them carefully to reproduce the face. We also did another single cover for Save Hip-Hop. This song is an anthem against the deplorable state of music and playing on the righteous hero theme, we made Metals face logo into a crest for a super chest. The rest was just fun – Classic DC style Scope logo and spandex mesh texture. The project (which is really dope) is available for name-your-own-price download from the Scope Music Store.
Metal – What Should I Call this Mixtape? Read Post »
This summer the homies Scope Urban Apparel dropped their first mixtape featuring the lineup of Scope Artists. The project was mixed by DJ Leah V and released for digital download and debuted live on UnRegular Radio. For the cover art, we worked on creating a mostly photographic cover that played on the title of the tape. Using small flags, a hand cut stencil of the Scope logo and flammable spray paint, we covered a selection of the flag and set it ablaze, creating the logo in flame through the flag. We then took pictures and videos until it burned itself out and selected the best shots for the front and back covers. The process was fun and pretty simple to execute once the idea came up but the results far exceeded our expectations. Perhaps this is could be a new medium for us. The final covers perfectly suited the purpose of breaking Scope into the music game with an attention grabbing cover. We also developed promo materials and a web graphics based on the same images.
